Why Open-Source?

Most of us who are engaged in development or use of open-source software have one reason or another to do it. The question of “Why open-source?” is something we should all reflect upon once, since we should be well prepared to answer the same question confidently in the future.

It was inspiring to see sessions dedicated to open-source in AGU 2017, and even more exciting to hear mentions of Python usage in talks here and there. I really encourage you to have a look at this informal session titled Open-Source Software in the Geosciences. The content of the session applies to all open-source development in sciences in general, although it was intended to be focussed on geosciences.

Since the video is rather long, I have summarized the gist of the talk below. The following questions were asked to the panel.

1. What considerations went into the decision of making a software openly available?

1.1. ... decision of not making a software openly available?

2. Has making FOSS affected your career?

2.1. Means to promote your code

3. Community impact

4. Has your perception changed through making FOSS?

5. Any regrets?

6. Future of FOSS development
